Botox is a highly-purified protein designed to improve the appearance of crow’s feet and frown lines. It works by relaxing the muscles responsible for creating these wrinkles.
Botox is appropriate for patients with fine lines and wrinkles who don’t want to undergo more extensive treatment, such as a facelift.
Dermal fillers are injectable substances designed to improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and folds in the skin. Dr. Bruell offers 2 dermal fillers: Juvéderm and Restylane. Both of these fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in the skin. When injected, the compound helps wrinkles and lines become less evident. Juvéderm and Restylane also restore some of the skin’s volume, making it appear fuller and more youthful.
Patients with lines above the upper lip, lines running from the mouth to the chin, lines from the nose to the mouth, or frown lines find dermal fillers helpful. Dermal fillers benefit patients with other issues as well. Dr. Bruell helps patients determine whether this treatment is best for them.
Patients experience little-to-no pain during treatment with Botox, Juvéderm, or Restylane. If a patient is anxious about the treatment, Dr. Bruell provides topical anesthetic to patients during treatment.
In rare cases, the protein used in Botox treatment may spread to other locations, which affects muscles not targeted during treatment. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane may cause mild redness, tenderness, swelling, itching, or bruising at the site of the injection. In some cases, lumps or bumps may also appear under the skin after treatment with dermal fillers, though all of these side effects are rare.
The effects of a Botox injection last up to 6 months. The effects of treatment with Juvéderm or Restylane last anywhere from 4-6 months. Certain formulations of dermal fillers last longer. Patients who want to maintain the results of Botox or dermal fillers can return for additional treatments when results begin to fade.
